When my daughter Lisa was graduating from UC Santa Cruz, she wanted Davy and me to come early to attend a party that was to start at collegiate hour of 11 p.m. That seems like a no-brainer, right? Except we lived five hundred miles away, and we’d be driving through LA’s Friday-night rush-hour traffic. Obviously we needed to
leave our house no later than 2 p.m. to make it on time. A caveat here: Davy does not have the same, intense sense of time that I’ve acquired from 33 years of teaching school and being controlled by school bells. So a 2 p.m. departure for him could mean a 3 p.m. departure, or later. I knew this about him, and I fumed
when it appeared he wasn’t coming home from the office until he was good and ready. (I’m sure you can see where I was making a big mistake!)
If you’ve read The Happiness Path, you know that my fuming was like shooting myself in the foot. I believed Davy would be late, and, so predictably, that belief was getting created. Gad I was mad! He got home around 3:30, and we left at 4 p.m. from coastal Orange County. Traffic was already piling up. We’d never make Lisa’s party at this rate. After half an hour in stalled traffic, I decided that I’d rather be happy than right. In other words . . .. . .I turned to The Happiness Path. I knew what I feared, and I knew what I wanted, crazy as it seemed. Boldly, I decided that we’d make it to Lisa’s party on time, even though apparent reality made it seem impossible. While traffic didn’t just suddenly open up, we somehow got out of LA and down the Grapevine by 6:30, which surprised the heck out of us. Then we had a bit of a radiator problem, but it worked itself out. And we stopped for dinner in Paso Robles. Still, we got to the party in Santa Cruz five minutes early. It’s really weird how plastic time is, how short it can be, and how long it can stretch, especially when you choose to be bold. I have no idea what would have happened had I not decided that we’d get to Lisa’s party on time. All I know is we got there on time, and we were happy! Do you have a story about when you boldly decided you wanted something and then created it? Send it to us!
The Happiness Path
Buy on Amazon ($11.99) Kindle ($2.99) I can not say enough about this book. I have read almost all of the famous books out there about the mind-body connection and how your body reacts/responds/creates your life from a combination of your thoughts, feelings and beliefs, including but not limited to "Ask and it is Given," by Esther and Jerry Hicks & "Excuse me, your life is waiting," by Lynn Grabhorn and several others. This book fills in all the holes that the other books left me with! - M. Vertalino
