“Don’t look back.”
“Your past is just a story.” When I read these well-meaning posts, I kind of shudder. Your past is a huge part of what creates your future, whether you realize it or not, and whether you want it to or not. Why? Elephant’s memory Your ego, fortunately, is designed to have a very long memory.
When you notice a tornado coming your way, you don’t have to go through a long process to figure out whether to watch it or not. Your ego, from its awareness of previous tornadoes (even if it’s just from watching The Wizard of Oz), grips your senses, and you seek safety. (If you’re a storm chaser, your ego might react differently.)
So it’s for your own efficient that your ego has a long memory. But that’s not always a blessing. Here’s why. Snowball effect Your ego often fails to see and remember things accurately, because critical thinking is not its forte. Consider a little child in his crib crying for comfort; every second it takes before someone enters the room is another opportunity for the child’s ego to unfairly or not decide people don’t care about him. This memory, along with other similar ones, gets filed away by his ego for future reference, for the rest of his life. That’s right. For the rest of his life part of him believes people don’t care about him. You can probably see how that might not work well in his life. A long shelf life You’re probably reading this post because you’re already hip to the fact that your thinking influences upcoming events. For your future’s sake, you try to think as positively as you can. Great first step! You catch yourself thinking that something is impossible, and you change your thought to deciding it’s possible, even extremely possible. That’s positive thinking. Leap forward The next big step is to detect old experiences that created negative beliefs and change them. Put simply, consider a negative belief that came from an old experience, and ask yourself what you’d rather believe. When you discover that, ask yourself what you would have had to experience instead to create that belief. Imagine it. Let your ego experience it. For a helpful and more detailed explanation of how to alter forgotten negative experiences lodged in your subconscious and the beliefs they create, read my book The Happiness Path available on Amazon, Nook, and Smashwords. You’ll be gifted with a huge understanding of why you create what you do, and how to change the experiences you no longer want to have. Enjoy! You’ll be glad you read it!
